Lenovo has been quick to respond to reports that one of its ThinkPad laptops burst into flames at Los Angeles' LAX airport and has annonunced a recall of more than half a million units which have the suspect Sony batteries.

The Lithium Ion batteries sold in IBM notebooks are just the latest in several million batteries affected by manufacturing process which have turned out to be a danger to users. Lenovo, which had previously denied that its batteries would be affected by the manufacturing fault have been virtually forced into the recall after examining the charred remains of the ThinkPad that so publicly burst into fireworks in the US.

There are 526,000 batteries in the recall.

While Dell and Apple both spent considerable time and witnesed several reports of spontaneous fires caused by the dodgy batteries before announcing their recalls, Lenovo has only suffered a single well known reported incident with the Sony Litium Ion batteries.

Apple had nine incidents of batteries overheating, some of which caused harm to their users.

According to reports analysts have suggested that Sony could be forced to recall as many as 10 million units before it is done. So far the recall count is below 7 million. It is unknown at this time whether, or how much, Sony is bearing the cost of the battery recalls. however, it is almost certainly have a negative impact on its reputation as a contract manufacturer.

Web news reports put the total cost of recalling the faulty batteries as high as US$250 for the Dell and Apple recalls which numbered around 6.1 million units.
