Google has announced a mobile client for its Gmail service
that mimics the company's PC browser service by incorporating search, allowing
attachments and its free (excluding carrier charges).

The Java application can be downloaded to your phone by
pointing its browser to gmail.com/app and signing
up if you don't already have an email account at Gmail you can get one right
from your phone. If you don't already have a Gmail account, you can sign up for
an account via SMS by going to gmail.google.com
and clicking on "sign up for Gmail."
The company says its new system is fast and feature-rich. It
incorporates pre-fetching of messages to reduce access time at the user
interface. The amount of clicking and scrolling in the interface has been "drastically
reduced" also to make accessing, reading, composing and searching all the more
efficient.
The only way to access your Gmail prior to the release of
this client was to go through your browser to the regular website which, of
course, is designed primarily for use with a mouse. The mobile client aims to
remove the roadblocks to using the limited navigational and input functionality
on the typical mobile phone.
"Google's mobile products are designed to enable people
to quickly and easily get the information they want on the go," said Deep
Nishar, director of product management at Google.
"We realize the role mobile phones play as a key driver
for balancing online and offline worlds, and we're committed to developing
products that help people stay connected when they're away from their
computers. Gmail for mobile devices delivers on that commitment."
