Alcatel and mobile media player company Archos have announced an agreement to work together to develop a mobile TV tuned in to "Unlimited Mobile TV solution".

The Alcatel solution is a hybrid terrestrial and satellite broadcast solution based on an evolution of the DVB-H standard in the S-Band (2.2 GHz). It will take the two companies until late next year to come out with a product.

The new mobile TVs will adhere to the upcoming standard being prepared in the DVB Forum by the dedicated DVB-SSP (Satellite Services for Portable devices) Workgroup.

The Alcatel solution is designed to help network operators leverage their existing 3G network investments while delivering "an unlimited number of channels, to an unlimited audience with unlimited coverage and maximum interactivity". No small task.

Alcatel initially announced its vision at the GSM World Congress In Barcelona earlier this year.

So far it's working on bringing together partners such as Archos and DiBcom, which is a fables French semiconductor company that designs high-performance chipsets to enable low-power mobile and portable TV reception at speeds up to 130 mph.

Other partners include TeamCast which builds OEM carrier equipment and is heavily involved in the DVB- H spec development and UDcast a specialist in satellite IP appliances.

Handset maker Sagem is also a part of the team.

Olivier Coste, President of Alcatel's mobile broadcast activities, said: "This cooperation represents a significant milestone in the ramp-up of the "Unlimited Mobile TV" solution, taking full advantage of the availability of the S-Band spectrum at the level of a whole country or a continent, and of our system's ability to reach users wherever they are, including inside buildings."
