Live life on the move? Samsung's new WiMax multifunction
device will keep you connected, productive and entertained without dragging you
down. The three-fold device has a full QWERTY keyboard, five inch screen and
30GB drive in a new form factor PC that will make you think twice about your next
laptop.
Samsung has show off its latest and greatest convergence device
the SPH-P9000 and in one hit has set a new benchmark for mobile computing.
Connecting with either high speed wireless broadband using
WiMax or with CDMA EV-DO, the PDA-based device is a ‘gotta have' for people who
live on the road.
While PDA devices have had QWERTY keyboard as an optional
extra for many years, this device builds the keyboard right into the unit offering
a degree of utility users who actually need to produce longer text have never
encountered till now.
Well, when we say now. It's not right now. The devise is
slated for launch in Korea
in the first half of next year, after that, who knows.
Mobile WiMAX is destined to open up mobile computing to a
new level. However it will come down to the devices to make it worth while. Having
a device that offers a high level of functionality to make the most of the high
speed connectivity is going to be the challenge for those not wanting to lug
round one of those ‘huge' ultra-portable laptops, but need more than a
smartphone.
The SPH-P9000 is not just about work though, Samsung has
packed the device with fun stuff including a still/video camera and the device
is a full optioned media player as well.
Hey don't get me wrong. This thing is a PC. It runs Windows
XP which not only confers power, but ease of use and interoperability for previously
notebook bound workers.
Oh, did we mention it was a mobile phone?
The five inch WVGA screen should be ample whether you are
viewing a movie or doing some serious report writing.
The device weighs only about a pound (actual 560 grams) so
it'll be heavier that your smartphone or PDA, but significantly lighter than
Sony's new world's lightest 12-inch VAIO Type G weighing
in at 898 grams.
Kitae Lee, President of the Telecommunication Network
Business at Samsung Electronics, says "Our new SPH-P9000 is just one of the few
Mobile WiMAX convergence devices to be introduced to the world. Samsung will
expand our portfolio of mobile convergence devices, as we expect to expand our
global Mobile WiMAX services globally."
He adds, "Samsung will continuously drive the market with
pioneering telecommunication technology and services. Samsung will meet the
demands of Mobile WiMAX services and convergence devices by delivering the
right combination of technology and design,"
