Samsung has previewed a new solution to mobile phone storage
int eh form of a SIM card with a 1GB storage capacity.
While most Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards have a
small amount of storage space, the latest S-SIM card from Samsung could take
standard storage levels in mobile phones to anew dimension.
The new SIM design is a smart card IC-based card used to
identify users in GSM mobile environments, but with the huge uptake in multimedia
functionality on mobile phones, Samsung figures it's worth putting a little
extra NAND flash memory on the card for storage.
It uses the traditional SIM interface and doesn't make the
SIM any larger than a standard SIM, says the company and it makes storage far
more convenient for the user.
As email, pictures, digital music and document become
commonplace on mobile phones, storage and security features become more
important.
"This new high-performance S-SIM demonstrates Samsung's
technology leadership and vision to provide ultimate technology and solutions
for the fast evolving mobile and IT environment," said Dr. Chil Hee Chung,
senior vice president of chip card and microcontroller development team at
Samsung Electronics.
It's not a complete revolution of course, Samsung introduced
a 128 MB S-SIM in 2004.
