Airlines Agree To Integrate iPods: UPDATE |

Apple has done a deal with six airlines that will allow you to plug your iPod into the plane's in-flight entertainment system and even replay your own movies.
The airlines; Air France, Continental, Delta, Emirates, KLM
and United will begin offering their passengers iPod seat connections which
power and charge their iPods during flight and allow the video content on their
iPods to be viewed on the their seat back displays.
It's something of a coup for Apple and the iPod ecosystem and
another barrier to acceptance for Microsoft's new Zune player.
The new system should be available from the named airlines
by mid-2007, but Apple is also working with Panasonic Avionics Corporation to get
even more planes onboard (pardon the pun).
"There is no better travelling companion than an iPod, and
now travellers can power their iPods during flight and even watch their iPod
movies and TV shows on their seat back displays," said Greg Joswiak, Apple's
vice president of Worldwide iPod Product Marketing.
"We're excited to work with Air France, Continental, Delta,
Emirates, KLM and United to offer iPod users an even better in-flight
experience," he said.
UPDATE: Apple PR was maybe a little too keen to get this news out to the market following the launch of Microsoft's Zune player. According to Reuters, two of the airlines it contacted about this story say they are far from definite about the proposed iPod integration. An Air France spokesperson said its "way to early to confirm" while a spokesperson for KLM claimed there had only been "informal contacts" between itself and Apple regarding the idea.
