Befitting its leading position in mobile phone market share,
Nokia has announced not one, not two or three, but four new mobile phones at an event
in Amsterdam.
While we will only see three of the new models in the Asia
Pacific, the new phones are squarely aimed at the consumer market and are designed
with a range of features (and pricing) to offer broad appeal to next year's
phone buying public.
There are three mid-range models; the Nokia 6300, Nokia 6290
and the Nokia 6086 and the Nokia 2626 which is targeted to consumers in entry
markets.
All four models will begin shipping in the first quarter of next
calendar, though as we said above the Nokia 6086 will not be available in Asia Pacific
markets.
The Nokia 6300 monoblock is less than 13.1mm thick and will
retail around €250 (A$420) before subsidies or taxes.
The Nokia 6290 is a general purpose 3G smartphone based on the
S60 3rd Edition operating system. This flip phone has a 2 megapixel camera,
push email and a highly spec'd display. The Nokia 6290 is expected to debut at around €325 (A$550) before
subsidies or taxes.
The best you can say about the Nokia 2626 is that its
available in a range of colours. This is a volume phone that has few smarts. It
doesn't even have a camera, but there are a couple of nice features, such as FM
radio and voice recorder to set it apart from a lump of wood. The Nokia 2626 is priced at approx. €75 (A$125) before subsidies or taxes.
Nokia 6086 cameraphone (the one not coming to APAC) is a quad-band
GSM that has UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) allowing seamless roaming and handover
between Wi-Fi and cellular networks. The estimated retail price of the Nokia 6086
is €200 (A$340) before subsidies or taxes.
