Symbol Technologies has announced a Radio Frequency switch that
bridges the gap between Wi-Fi, RFID and other key RF technologies making
enterprise wireless much easier to deploy.
The company also announced version three of its existing
wireless switch, the WS5100. Both it and the RFS7000 RF Switch leverage what
Symbol calls its Wireless Next Generation (Wi-NG) architecture.
Basically, this is a way to bring together a wide range of
wireless technologies. Wi-NG is designed to support and consolidate Wi-Fi and
emerging RF technologies such as RFID, 802.11n, mesh, Voice over Wireless LAN
(VoWLAN) and WiMAX.
Anthony Bartolo, vice president and general manager of
Symbol's Wireless Infrastructure and RFID Divisions said, "The convergence of
voice, video, and data, effectively pushes the new mobile edge from the wired
to the wireless touch point."
The RFS7000 RF Switch is intended for factories, hospitals,
warehouses, educational campuses and Government institutions and will allow
them to move away from ‘piecemeal RF technology' solutions.
Running on a Linux operating system that provides separation
between infrastructure, services, application and management layers, the
systems are meant to be upgradeable as technology progresses rather than the
rip and replace so common with earlier RF equipment.
The Symbol RFS7000 RF Switch and WS5100 wireless switch will
be available beginning in the first quarter of 2007. The WS5100 starts from A$2898.07
for a 6 port switch to A$17811.36 for a 48 port WS5100, while pricing for the
RFS7000 won't be available until next year.
A software upgrade to the latest version of the WS5100 wireless
switch will be available shortly to customers with a Symbol Services support
agreement.
