Ericsson is increasing its posture in the music downloading business with a new global agreement to distribute full track downloads and master tones from independent label distributor, The Orchard.
The agreement covers all major territories outside the U.S. and covers a catalogue
of staggering proportions. Claiming to be the world's "leading digital
distributor and marketer of independent music" The Orchard has more
than one million tracks from thousands of labels covering more than 70
countries.
The
contract will enable Ericsson to offer tracks from artists such as
GreenDay, Coldplay, and Ray Charles to its carrier customers and their
subscribers.
The catalog will be added to the current offering available via Ericsson's existing, hosted whitelabel music service.
Claes Ödman,
Vice President, Multimedia Solutions at Ericsson, said Ericsson entered
the partnership as it will "both broaden and deepen" the company's
content catalog.
Greg Scholl, chief executive of The Orchard, says,
"Increasingly, the leading technology companies and digital retailers
worldwide appreciate the critical role independent music plays in the
viability of their products, and more broadly, as the lifeblood that
feeds the music industry.
"Our agreement with Ericsson ensures that
our artists and labels can reach a global audience throughout
Ericsson's extensive mobile network. We look forward to working as a
close marketing partner with Ericsson to sell great independent music,
and increase the opportunities available to our respective customers
worldwide."
Ericsson also has a global deal with Napster music. Together the two launched a mobile music service in Ireland on the 02 network.
