PRESS RELEASE From 3GSM World Congress: Belfast, United Kingdom, 5th February 2007 - Aepona, the leading supplier of Service Network products and solutions to telecoms operators worldwide, today announced its solution for Cellular to WiFi Roaming, based on the 3GPP Voice Call Continuity (VCC) specifications.
The announcement marks a further move by
Aepona into the Fixed-Mobile Convergence market, and strengthens the
company's position as a key player in the evolution towards
next-generation all-IP networks based on the IP Multimedia Subsystem
(IMS). Aepona's VCC solution, which will be demonstrated at this year's
3GSM event in Barcelona, is built on the company's highly successful
Universal Service Platform, which has been deployed with several of the
world's leading telecoms operators including the France Telecom /
Orange Group, Sprint, Vimpelcom and KPN.
"Cellular to WiFi
roaming based on the VCC specifications will be one of the main initial
drivers for operators to implement IMS in their networks", said
Jean-Charles Doineau, Service Infrastructure Practice Leader at leading
research firm, Ovum. "Many operators are taking a service-led approach
towards adopting IMS, and our research indicates that both fixed and
mobile operators view VCC as being a strategically important element of
their Fixed-Mobile convergence strategies."
"Adding Voice Call
Continuity to our portfolio of solutions is a natural step for Aepona",
said Kieran Dalton, Aepona's Chief Technical Officer. "Much of the
required functionality is already present in our Universal Service
Platform, including the required connectors to both SIP/IMS and SS7
networks, multi-party call control, user status and charging
capabilities. This, coupled with the fact that our platform is already
serving millions of subscribers globally, means that it is very
straightforward for us to introduce the VCC solution as an application
layer on top of existing, proven technology".
A unique aspect of
Aepona's approach to VCC is the company's emphasis on the real-life
challenges that will be faced by operators contemplating Cellular to
WiFi roaming.
"Most vendors who are
active in VCC today are focused on the call handover technology
aspects", continued Dalton. "Whilst this is obviously an important
element of the solution, Aepona believes that the real challenges for
operators will be related to how call routing decisions are managed and
controlled, how to apply intelligent rating and charging to calls that
move between the Wi-Fi and cellular domains, and how to ensure the
interoperability of value-added services between these domains. Because
of our existing capabilities and our installed base, we believe Aepona
is in a very strong position to address these challenges".
Aepona's
VCC solution will be demonstrated at the 3GSM event taking place in
Barcelona from 12-15th February 2007, Hall 2, stand 2B01.
