Amongst Nokia's recent phone handset announcements is the Nokia 6610 which is the first sign that Nokia plans to make GPS capabilities a mainstream features of cell phone handsets.
With music players, high resolution cameras and Internet becoming
passe as a selling point for mass market phones, Nokia
is lining up Global Position System and Assisted Global Position
Systems to be the next must have functionality for you phone. The new
Nokia 6110 Navigator has them both to bring navigation-enabled phones
into the mass market for 2007.
Nokia expects the 6110 Navigator to begin shipping in the second
quarter of this calendar year for an estimated retail price of €450.
The device has integrated maps with routing information and location
search. Nokia says that with a touch of a button you can quickly have a
map of your current location search for destinations, find specific
routes, or locate services such as restaurants, hotels or shops.
Then find your way there with full turn-by-turn 3D navigation of the best route by car or on foot.
"Location-based experience is among the fastest growing areas in mobile
devices. Offering integrated GPS functionality, the Nokia 6110
Navigator will put maps, routing and navigation into the hands of the
broadest consumer market world-wide," said Peter Ropke, Senior Vice
President, Broad Appeal Business Unit, Nokia.
"With the Nokia 6110 Navigator, mobile phone owners will be able to
enjoy the benefits of navigation in their daily life and enjoy a wide
range of location-based services - whether they want to explore a city,
search for restaurants, get weather forecasts, or look for travel
guides for a weekend trip."
The Nokia 6110 Navigator will come with a local map pre-installed on
the memory card ready for immediate navigation and then additional maps
and content - such as traffic information, weather services and travel
guides will have to be purchased online or downloaded direct to the
phone using the special Nokia Map Manager application.
The 6110 Navigator will be able to do this pretty quickly thanks to the
HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) connectivity that allows for
broadband speed downloads of up to 3.6 Mbps.
The navigation functionality is all very cool, but Nokia hasn't
scrimped on the traditional phone features to make this phone
affordable.
You still get real time push email with support for attachments and a
nifty Message reader function that will read your emails to you out
load.
Then there's all the usualy 3G multimedia tools such as full screen
video sharing and video calls. The phone has a large 2.2-inch QVGA
(1600 x 1200 pixels resolution) screen, capable of displaying 16
million colors.
A 2 megapixel camera with a dedicated capture key, panorama mode, and
integrated flash has a slide over lens protector to keep you pics sharp
and free from scratches and dust marks.
The Nokia 6110 is based on the industry leading Symbian S60 operating
system and so have a huge range of downloadable games and applications
available for it.
The slider is not too big either Nokia says the phone will be 101 x 49
x 20 mm which is pretty acceptable if you are thinking about this as a
GPS replacement device and the weight will be 123 grams which is a
little on the heavy side for a traditional phone only device, but more
than acceptable if you consider the power you have in your hand.
Nokia says the 6110 Navigator will have a talk-time up to 3.5 hours on GSM
and 2.5 hours on WCDMA (3G) networks. Standby time will be up to 11 days depending on network conditions.
