Atheros Communications has announced it reached 100 million wireless LAN (WLAN) chipsets sold to data after what the company called "an extraordinary year" in 2006. The company posted a 64 percent revenue growth to US$301.7 million, putting together the seventh consecutive growth quarter.
At only eight-years old the pace of growth is phenomenal. Atheros
shipped more than 40 percent of the 100 million cumulative WLAN
chipsets during the last year.
It says that its single-chip 802.11g and 802.11a/g solutions were
the foundation of its 2006 success. 50 percent of its sales came from
the a/g/b products but the importance of future standards was evidenced
by the 20 percent contributed bypre-standards 802.11n gear in the form of
The company says its customers are shipping a wide variety of Atheros-based
draft 802.11n products with more than 50 SKUs in the market today. With
the recent stabilization of the 2.0 draft and the advent of end-product
certification by the Wi-Fi Alliance to begin mid-year, Atheros
anticipates the adoption of 802.11n products will continue to grow.
Last year Atheros also points to another key advance, the
company began shipping its Radio-on-Chip for Mobile embedded solutions
for building dual mode cellular handsets and low-cost VoIP phones, even
mobile gaming devices, cameras, camcorders, music players andPDAs.
The increased adoption of WLAN
in the carrier and gateway market helped push the company's single-chip
802.11g solutions into five of the top broadband gateway brands
worldwide - a trend the company expects to continue with 802.11n
products.
"The 100-million chipset milestone signifies our employees'
continued commitment to making Atheros the leading provider of the
industry's highest performance wireless communications products," said Craig Barratt, president and chief executive officer of Atheros.
"While Atheros' success to date has come from its wireless LAN
expertise, the company is extending its technical leadership into the
Bluetooth and Ethernet markets to meet the growing needs of our
world-class customer base."
