NSW BlackBerry users were forced into withdrawal yesterday as a hardware upgrade in a Sydney exchange put a stop to one of Vodafone's email traffic in NSW.
According to this report in by The Australian, the installation of a new hardware switch at Vodafone's Newington exchange proved to be incompatible and halted data traffic for GPRS users between 6:30am and 11:30am yesterday.

Although the Crackberry drought was restricted to NSW customers o=users in other states trying to send email into NSW would also have been affected by the blackout.

The GPRS failure mainly affected mobile email users, said the company claiming voice and 3G data traffic was affected. Though Vodafone supports both BlackBerry and Windows Mobile email services, it is understood BlackBerry users were the most affected.

Despite having a back-up system in place, there was not enough capacity to remedy the problem a company spokesperson said. The company was unwilling to say how many email users it has in NSW.
