Easy VoIP System For Mobile Makers |

A systems platform company for mobile phones has announced a complete Voice over IP (VoIP) Linux system stack for dual-mode (WiFi/GSM) phones. The software is designed to make it easy for handset manufacturers to deploy VoIP solutions on the Wi-Fi-enabled mobile phones.
The developer, a Silicon Valley start-up called a la Mobile
has developed the Linux solution as part of what it calls its
Convergent Linux. This is a complete operating system (OS) for
mobile phones with an entirely open and configurable platform such that
it can be used on any type of hardware with little or no customisation
required.
This dramatically accelerates time-to-market and ensures device software interoperability enabling handset manufacturers
to choose the software components, functionality
and device look-and-feel that are best-suited for their target
customers.
The
VoIP 'stack' is the first of the company's new Made-Ready Series of
Linux software offerings tuned for function-centric mobile phones.
"The idea of a series of Made-Ready Linux solutions is a la Mobile's
direct response to a number of requests from handset vendors interested
in completely integrated Linux system stacks that are particularly
well-tuned for a specific function, and that are ready to go to market
with little or no modifications," said Pauline Lo Alker, President and CEO at a la Mobile, Inc.
"With
the increasing market interests in dual-mode phones tuned for VoIP, it
is a ‘no brainer' for us to offer it as the first of our Made-Ready
Series of function-centric Linux solutions."
A recent report by market research firm, Juniper Research predicted that the global VoWiFi
(Voice-over-WiFi) handset market will grow to almost US$70 billion in
revenues by 2012. The majority of these will be dual-mode handsets.
Based on the company's Convergent Linux System Platform (CLP), a la Mobile's
VoIP Made-Ready Linux Solution supports both WiFi and GSM with an
integrated SIP-based VoIP client, a browser, Java, Adobe Flash and a
core suite of applications such as phonetop, media, messaging and
email.
"The idea is to enable
handset customers (makers) to bring dual-mode phones to market readily
with no delays, while also giving them the peace-of-mind that the stack
is completely integrated, tested, supported and maintained," Alker said. "In
the upcoming months, we expect to introduce additional Made-Ready Linux
solutions tuned for other function-centric mobile handsets."
