According to a recent survey
conducted by online dating website, RSVP and 3
mobile, 50 per cent more women than men admitted to being a 'Dear John Texter'
meaning they have broken up with their partner using a text message from their mobile phone.
What is more, over half
of the women surveyed admitted to being guilty of intextication - texting under the influence
of alcohol.
"Technology is now so present in our
communication that it's figuring more and more in our love lives. Most women
highly value communicating, and mobile phones have become a key relationships
tool," said RSVP's Lija
Jarvis.
On the up side, technology also featured in people getting together with just under two thirds of respondents saying they rely primarily on
e-mail and text to contact prospective dates.
Almost all respondents believe
that technology has made dating easier for busy people. According to 94 per cent of men and
96 per cent of women technology has made dating easier.
"Our schedules often prevent us from
spending time with our partners or prospective dates, but technology gives us a
way to stay in touch," said Jarvis.
The increased prevalence of mobile
phones, email and instant messenger in our dating lives has led to previously
unknown initialisms like H&K (hugs and kisses) entering mainstream language.
As a result, society is becoming increasingly more "tech-lingual", with the
ability to decode these abbreviations.
"The immediacy of these new
technologies is continuing to compress and compact language. For example, ‘all
my love' has become AML," said Jarvis.
This tailored tech language is part
of the convenience that time-strapped singles are embracing in their dating
strategies.
"We're now also seeing some people
making the mistake of using text messages or emails as a replacement for
meaningful face to face contact. However, there is always the danger or email
and text communication suffering from misinterpretation, either contextually or
with regard to tone. Take the time to pick
up the phone to chat to potential dates - and don't forget to kiss your partner
in real life as well as in a text or email!"
Just for a bit of fun RSVP has decoded the following
popular abbreviations for the TXT challenged:
-
143's (I love you)
-
2G2BT (To good to be
true)
-
AML's (all my love)
-

-
H&K's (hugs and
kisses)
-
Lol (Laugh out
loud)
-
B4N (Bye for
now)
-

-

God)
-
