News South Wales Police announced they have taken five young men into
custody charged with sexual assault and warned others they face up to
three years jail for spreading the videophone footage of the rape.
Apart from being in extremely poor taste, Liverpool Local Area
Commander Detective Superintendent Mick Plotecki
warned teenagers that have been spreading the video of the criminal act
that further circulation of the video is a criminal offence
in itself and attracts serious penalties.
"The video footage of this attack can only be described as harrowing,"
Supt Plotecki said. "Anyone who has a copy of this video who publishes
it in any way,
including forwarding it to other individuals via mobile or internet is
committing a serious offence under the Commonwealth Criminal Code."
"Any person convicted of this offence could face up to 3 years jail."
The five 17-year-old men are accused of gang raping a 17-year-old girl.
An attack which Police allege was recorded on a video-capable mobile
phone.
Police will allege the assault occurred at a private home in
January this year but that the teenage victim came forward only nine
days ago and reported the matter
to police after she was allegedly threatened by a person not involved
in the assault.
It is further alleged in recent weeks, copies of the video were
circulated to a number of students before education authorities and
police were alerted.
