Acer Australia beefs up its multimedia credentials adding Dolby sound
to the new range of Aspire notebooks which are packaged in a BMW
inspired casing the company is calling Gemstone.
The new offering might actually be thought of as two distinct ranges as
Acer has introduced two distinctive designs - one for the fashion
conscious consumer and one for the more sedate commercial environment.
Both are great looking notebooks.
Laying claim to being the the first notebook brand to offer Dolby Home
Theater or Dolby Digital Live for virtual surround sound across the
full line of consumer notebooks, Acer says its design team worked with
BMW Group Designworks USA to study design trends, develop the concept
and visualise new forms for the consumer focused Aspire laptops.
What Acer designers learned from the BMW design team was that three of
the most important design features were colour and material, branding
and naming, and shape treatment.
"The new Aspire Gemstone notebook has a noticeably rounded and fuller
shape; a bold diversion from the traditional ultra-slim portable
design," said Raymond Vardanega, Marketing Director Acer Computer
Australia.
The new Aspire's have a 3D Holographic finish in a shiny, jet-black
that encases a satin-finish sub-layer, with the Acer logo floating
above like a shimmering holographic projection. Acer says this unique
feature is achieved through an advanced IMD (In-Mold Design) technique.
On the inside users will be treated to a ceramic finish in light grey.
Its not actually ceramic, but ceramic-like to strike a startling
contrast to the black exterior.
The whole notebook is smoothly curved like a finely-cut opal and provides a very comfortable touch, says Acer.
"Acer is tailoring its notebook design and functionality for consumer
and commercial market needs," added Lindsay Tobin, Product Business
Manager - Mobile. "The Aspire brand characteristics are easy and fun,
while the TravelMate focuses on dependability for the mobile user."
The TravelMate notebooks, designed for business users, get a magnesium
alloy casing that is said to be 20 times stronger and much lighter than
plastic. This is to minimise weight and protect against shock,
vibration, dust, rain and everyday wear and tear.
