Dell says that testing on its new D630 laptops show an increased performance of as much as 15 per cent over the previous
generation while battery
life stretches out to 9.4 hours.
The company has announced three new models, the D630 and D830 are
Centrino laptops while the AMD-based Latitude D531 also appeared as a
mainstream-value notebook.
The company says the new notebooks are so green they get an Energy Star
rating of 4.0 with certain compliant configurations, but the new
lappies are not just about working longer hours while saving the
planet, the inclusion of Draft N WiFi, SanDisk solid state disc drives
and brighter displays are all part of the new look line up. The
displays are up to 38 percent brighter than the previous generation of
notebooks, says the company.
The goodies don't stop there though, for those who can wait, there is a
Latitude D430 ultra-mobile
notebook and Dell Precision M4300 both based on the Intel processors
staged to appear in
the coming weeks. It won't be until third quarter, however that we will
see a Dell notebook based on the Centrino Pro business platform
announced by Intel last week. When it does arrive it will be called the
Latitude D630c - if you want to keep an eye out for it.
"Customers are sending us the message that they want mobile products
with the latest features but no added complexities that can distract
them from building their businesses," said Margaret Franco, director,
Dell Product Group. "We hear their message and are committed to leading
the industry with customizable systems that can easily be tailored to
meet ownership and productivity needs of our customers."
Predictably the Latitude D630 and D830 were designed with the latest Intel Core 2
Duo processors while the D531 is based on AMD Turion 64 and Sempron
processors.
But the newly announced machines also feature the support for fully
encrypted hard drives for maximum security with no performance loss and
while the optional SSD (Solid State Drives) are not immediately
available, there is also a surprise hybrid drive that comes as an
option to the Intel Turbo Memory cache card on the Latitude D630 and
D830.
The Hybrid hard drive has spinning disc like at traditional disk drive,
but also leverages flash memory to support Microsoft Vista ReadyDrive
and help reduce boot times.
"Dell is committed to producing the most energy-efficient notebooks and
desktops in the industry," said Franco. "We also ship our products with
Energy Smart power settings that are designed to exceed regulatory
compliance. This can enable customers to save money and helps decrease
their overall environmental footprint."
Pricing and Availability
With a starting weight of 2.00kg, the thin-and-light Latitude D630 is priced at A$2,208 in a base config and fits a 14.1-inch wide aspect XGA display within its 32.3 x 337 x 238mm form factor.
A base configuration for the high-performance Latitude D830 starts at A$2,328. Weighing 2.59kg the 35.3 x 361 x 262.6mm notebook includes a 15.4-inch wide aspect XGA display.
The AMD-based Latitude D531

14.1-inch wide-aspect display in a case that measures 35.3 x 361 x
262.6mm. Price is A$1,728.10 with a Turion 64 X2 Dual Core CPU.
