Yahoo! may have signed a new carrier up to its mobile search offering this week, but Google has gone one better signing the world's largest mobile phone maker up to its service. The two have announced at GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelonathat Google's search engine will be integrated with the Nokia Search application.

Exactly how this will play out in an environment where carriers do their utmost to keep users within a walled garden, is up for debate, but Nokia is just as keen to dictate how subscribers use their phones as the carrier's are. The integration of Google search into the Nokia search application will begin in select markets with the Nokia N96, Nokia N78, Nokia 6210 Navigator and Nokia 6220 classic.,. according to a company statement.

The service will be extended to other Nokia handset models progressively until, ultimately, Nokia will make Google search available to all its customers in over 100 countries potentially adding hundreds of millions to Google's mobile search footprint. Nokia Search is available on more than 40 Nokia devices in over 40 languages.

The collaboration builds on previous cooperation between the two giants. Google search was previously available on Nokia Internet tablets. The Nokia N95 multimedia computer also supports YouTube, which was acquired by Google in 2006.

Users will not only be able to search for web information using their handset, the Nokia Search application also makes it possible for them to find content on their own device. Once they find what they are looking for Nokia Search enables users to act on that information by engaging device assets such as maps, messaging or the browser with just one click.

"Providing choices for our consumers is an important driver in Nokia's Internet service strategy," said Ilkka Raiskinen, vice-president, software and services at Nokia. "This integration allows our consumers the ability to use the innovative search technologies, which have made Google almost synonymous with Internet search.

"Adding Google to Nokia Search provides mobile users with fast, relevant and comprehensive search experience that will be familiar to the people who use Google to search the web from their desktop," said Google's VP of Engineering and Products for Mobile Vic Gundotra. "Google search combined with the high quality applications on Nokia devices help make information available to Nokia device users wherever they are and provide an excellent overall experience."
