Vodafone Australia has introduced a new was to connect your laptop to the company's 3G network with the release of a USB modem device that saves that whole PC Card versus Express Card issue faced by owners of new laptops and MacBooks. voda_usb_modem

The HSDPA capable modem should deliver downloads at up to 1.8Mbps and upload at up to 384Kbps within coverage areas according to Vodafone network testing.

The external device joins Vodafone's other peripheral laptop options, a GPRS PC card, 3G PC Card and its 3G HSDPA PC Card - which are all Type II PCMCIA.

For a device that hangs out of your USB port, the new modem is an option for those with PC Express card slots in their notebooks, or for those who have an older notebook with a PC Card, but have plans to upgrade in the foreseeable future.

Apart from that, the USB modem is attractive enough, if that matters to you and is small at only 89x43x14 and 50 grams. However, at A$399 its pretty pricey compared to your other options.

Vodafone has its low-speed (48Kbps) GPRS cards reduced to A$99 at the moment and it's regular 3G (384Kbps) data card reduced from A$299 to A$199 and even its broadband 3.5G HSDPA which will run at the same speed as the USB modem is priced at A$299.

If you're interested the company is also offering two months free access to subscribers signing up to the 1GB account which is currently priced at $99.95 per month.

So while the company hasn't exactly responded to 3's new mobile broadband offering , it still retains the advantage of GPRS access when outside the 3G network coverage area as Vodafone has an extensive GPRS network of its own.

The two months free mobile broadband on the 1GB Data Bundle is only available to new accounts and will be on offer until 31, December 2006.
